As a US Air Force airman in 1956, while hitchhiking into London, Sergeant Jerry Lee looked in awe at a majestic and ancient castle that he saw on a distant hilltop, dreaming he would gain success and one day come back to buy it.
Upon his return to Rosedale, he began building expertise by teaching himself how to precast concrete on his dad’s ranch. He took a job at Pacific Ready Mix, and got permission to use the extra concrete from each batch that would get dumped and hauled away. He rented the yard next door and began using the free concrete to make concrete step treads for his business.
By the early 1960s, he had bought property and built the fabrication shop he still uses today. He hired welders and added fabricators to the staff of his rapidly-growing firm, Jerry Lee Stairs.
In 1965, the Little Red Wagon Wheelstander came to town. Very impressed, Jerry asked his father, Elgin, for his old 1923 Ford Model TT truck, which he soon had powered by a 427 Ford and doing wheelies the whole quarter mile. He began running all over the west and Canada and started building a loyal following of devoted fans who loved to see him and his truck in action.
In September ’69, Jerry Lee participated in a wheelie distance contest at Deer Park Raceway. Until that moment, no one had ever surpassed a mile on a wheelie, but Jerry Lee shattered that record, covering 5,330 feet. His remarkable feat is still celebrated today. This iconic moment in motorsport history is revered with awe and respect at every event featuring the General Jerry Lee truck. The legend of Jerry Lee and his unparalleled wheelie skills continue to be renowned within the circuit.
By the early 70s, Jerry took the season off to save money to buy a Rolls Royce. He saved so much, he decided to start construction on the castle he’d been dreaming of. Later, he bought 28 buildings and started building his 10,000 sq ft home. He now races with his son, Hoss, often side-by-side.
Despite his age, Jerry can still win; he’s still racing that same truck at age 88! He is the oldest drag racer running, but he’s not finished yet. He is pursuing one last record (it’s a secret for now). He still puts in his 12-hour days fabricating steel stairs and similar projects. Call him or his boy, Hoss, for high-quality steel projects.
